Measures for the Evaluation and Recording of Score of General Performance at GCAST

author: source:Readings:date:2025-07-25

To enhance classroom teaching and learning, improve teaching effectiveness, evaluate students' learning in diverse ways, provide teachers with the ability to manage interactive teaching, strengthen supervision and guidance of classroom teaching and extracurricular learning, and promote the development of learning styles, we have formulated measures for evaluating and recording scores of general performance in accordance with the actual situation of the institute.

Chapter 1 Basic Requirements

Article 1 Assessing students' grades is a vital and intricate responsibility that educators must approach with utmost attentiveness. They must diligently adhere to each step of the implementation process to guarantee the accuracy and authenticity of general performance. Such meticulousness serves to enhance the quality and the integrity of the grading system.

Chapter 2 Assessment Content of Students’ General Performance

Article 2 A student's general performance grade for a course consists of two parts: performance in class and assignment grades. Performance in class consists of discipline, attendance, quizzes, and exercises.

2.1 scores of Performances in Class

2.1.1 scores of classroom discipline

The recording basis includes:

(1)Whether attending class on time and whether abiding by class rules and policies of absence.

(2) Whether cooperating with the teacher in the roll call and whether there is any behaviour disturbing the roll call.

(3) Whether there are any behaviours violating class discipline, such as whispering, making noise and playing in class.

(4) Whether using mobile phones and other communication tools that are not allowed in class.

(5) Whether sleeping in class.

(6) Whether there are other behaviours unrelated to class teaching and learning.

2.1.2 Scores of class attendance.

2.1.3 Scores of classroom quizzes and exercises.

2.2 Scores of Assigned Work

2.2.1 students' grades in classroom summative assignments, laboratory reports, practical operations, course internships or course papers.

2.2.2 students' grades in unit tests, mid-term examinations (if any), skill tests or other summative assessments.

Chapter 3 Measures for Evaluation and Recording of Score of General Performance

Article 3 Scoring proportion of general performance of the course

3.1 The comprehensive score of each course is calculated as 100 points, which is composed of the score of general performance of the course and the score of final examination. The comprehensive score = (the score of general performance × defined percentage) + (the score of final examination × defined percentage);

3.2 The usual grade for a course is typically 30%-50% of the total grade. For practical courses, the usual grade can be 40%-60%.

Article 4 Detailed rules for the assessment of general performance:

4.1 Methods of Evaluating and Documenting Students' General Performance Grades in Courses:

(1) The scores of general performances can be given according to the rule of “backward deduction.” Students who are enrolled in the course will be assigned the usual course grades by default. The teacher will then make corresponding deductions or decide not to make any deduction based on the actual situation of each student.

(2) Recording methods for Classroom discipline and classroom attendance: the classroom teacher takes online sign-in, random sampling, classroom visual inspection methods, and distinguish between different situations. Based on the "assessment and recording methods" and demerit criteria, a decision is to be made to either impose a "deduction", "percentage/points deduction", or "no deduction".

(3) Methods of recording grades for homework, classroom quizzes and exercises: The instructor of the course evaluates the students according to the number of homework assignments submitted, the quality of the assignments, and the initiative and effectiveness in completing classroom quizzes and exercises. The grades are given in accordance with the "percentage system".

4.2 Requirements for the evaluation and documentation of general performance grades are as follows:

(1) For courses with less than 4 credit hours per week, class attendance shall not be less than 8 times and homework assessment shall not be less than 2 times.

(2) For courses with more than 4 credit hours per week, class attendance shall not be less than 12 times and homework assessment shall not be less than 4 times.

(3) For courses with 80 or fewer students, the number of students sampled each time shall not be less than 30% of the class size; for courses with 80-150 students, the number of students sampled each time shall not be less than 20% of the class size; for courses with 150 or more students, the number of students sampled each time shall not be less than 10% of the class size.

(4) The minimum number of assessments for a course for a graduating class and for a course with three classes combined may be appropriately reduced according to the actual situation.

4.3 Evaluators of Students' General Performance Grades in Courses

Each teacher is responsible for the evaluation of the usual grades of the course. Teaching supervisors and the person in charge of the teaching unit will carry out unscheduled inspections. If there is no record, it will be regarded as no classroom assessment and will be dealt with according to Teaching Discipline.

4.4 Calculation of The Student's General Performance Grades for The Course

The student's general performance grades in the course = full mark in usual grade - the deducted mark. If the grade is less than 60% of the full score, he/she will be disqualified from taking the examination of the course, and the total grade of the course will be counted as zero, and the student will need to retake this course. The instructor shall report the list of students disqualified from taking the examination of the course to the school which offers this course and report it to the Registrar's Office for record after approval by the person in charge of this course. The instructor of the course will announce the usual grades of all students and the list of students disqualified from the examination in public in the last class.

4.5 Students may appeal against the general performance grading (including disqualification decisions). Please refer to the "Academic Appeals and Complaints" policy in 5.8.
